Threads of Growth: Empowering Ghana's Traders in the African Continental Free Trade Area

Akua is an excellent businesswoman. She’s a trader who lives in a populated community in Accra, Ghana. She sells beautifully designed African print fabric. Over the years, Akua has created a loyal multinational client base with her warm smile, her engaging energy, and her business acumen. Not only have these qualities helped her business to thrive, but they have also given her the opportunity to positively impact her community, and in fact, the country’s economy.  

How? Well, the fabrics she sells always have cultural significance, and she always sources them from local manufacturers. She’s also employed a significant number of young people who assist in managing her many shops.

In addition to showcasing Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, her business has boosted the local fabric manufacturing sector in Ghana and contributed to job creation and economic empowerment. Her dedication and diligence exemplify the spirit of entrepreneurship that powers Ghana's thriving informal sector, contributing significantly to the country's economy. 

In a like manner, the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) aspires to unify the African market by promoting the free movement of products, services, capital, and investment across the continent. AfCFTA will ensure deepened economic integration, sustainable development, gender equality, industrialization, agricultural expansion, food security, and structural reforms across the continent.

As we celebrate “Africa Public Service Day” today, let’s remember that collaborative partnerships under the AfCFTA are essential for accessing new markets and exhibiting Ghana’s cultural heritage to the rest of Africa.

We all have a role to play. Be like Akua; play your role with dedication and diligence.
